The Beacon Centre at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton held a hugely successful open day to increase people’s understanding of radiotherapy recently.
There were exhibitions, display stands (including one staffed by the local charity SURE), behind the scenes tours, talks, the chance to meet specialist staff and the first showing of a special DVD all about the work of the department.
Babette Fuller, Beacon Centre Manager, said “We know that visiting the Beacon Centre can be a stressful or difficult time for people and their families. We want to do all we can to de-mystify the process and explain what really happens. The day was an attempt to do just that – and it was fantastic that almost 120 people were able to join us.”
The Beacon Centre provides radiotherapy treatment to more than 1,200 patients per annum. It accommodates chemotherapy and outpatient services, together with a radiotherapy unit with Elekta linear accelerators, a CT simulator and an 18 bed inpatient oncology ward, chemotherapy suite for 22 patients and a clinical trials room.
An innovative PPP project and the first to be driven by equipment, MESL provided the Project Director to Financial Close and the Chairman to the consortium providing the funding, design, construction and commissioning of the building and equipment and then the maintenance of the building and the major pieces of equipment, principally the linear accelerators, for 30 years.
