It is widely recognised that there is a significant need for improved radiotherapy infrastructure in the UK. Despite investment by the NHS over the last decade significant numbers of patients remain for whom radiotherapy would be an appropriate treatment that are unable to access the service. The required number of linear accelerators does not meet recommendations and is lower than in many other comparable countries. This is likely to be a key factor in UK cancer survival rates continuing not to meet international benchmarks.
Investment is required to ensure access to the latest technology e.g. image guided radiotherapy, develop local satellite centres and re-furbish existing centres. Renewed effort is underway directed by the National Cancer Strategy but this comes at a time of scarce public capital and opportunity for the independent sector and NHS to work in partnership to deliver cost effective improved services.
Building on our unique experience of being a key partner in developing the Taunton Radiotherapy Centre we are seeking to develop a network of radiotherapy centres in partnership with the NHS. We are in advanced discussions with a number of NHS Trusts across the UK.
