The Thornbury Gamma Knife Centre will be supporting a charity gala dinner to be held at the Cutlers’ Hall, Sheffield on the 23rd October helping to raise fund for brainstrust the brain tumour charity that offers a unique support service to people who are coping with a brain tumour. It will be a great event which is attracting strong interest.
Brain cancer is a dreadful disease and losing someone you love to such an aggressive illness is not only traumatic but also extremely distressing for the family and friends left behind. Some facts as below are worrying:-
- Brain tumours are one of very few conditions actually becoming more prevalent than a few decades ago.
- 58% of men and women diagnosed with brain cancer die within a year compared to 5% for breast cancer, 35% for leukaemia and 7% for prostate cancer.
- Brain cancer is the chief cause of cancer deaths in children and in the under 25s and under 35s.
- The consequence of brain tumours striking so young is that the average brain tumour is responsible for over 20 years of life lost in the average patient, making brain tumours the most lethal cancer by this measure
Providing support to patients and their families is key and brainstrust offers pragmatic support and advice from the point of diagnosis. This is possible because of their experience battling brain cancer, a unique network of advisors, supporters in the medical, scientific and nursing community and the generous support of charitable donors.
We are proud to be supporting the evening and to be working with brainstrust, marking our 6th anniversary providing Gamma Knife radiosurgery to some 1500 patients, changing and saving lives. Further information about the event can be obtained from Nicola Crisp at the centre. Tickets for the evening are £75 and further information can be found here.
